Pakistan player Mohammad Rizwan feels that sometimes he is embarrassed to play the anchor role in T20s. Rizwan mentioned that sometimes the franchises that hire him for T20 leagues urge him to hold his wicket so that other batters can smash runs freely.
Mohammad Rizwan is currently playing in Bangladesh Premier League 2023. He is part of Comilla Victorians team. Post the tournament, he lead Multan Sultans in PSL 2023, set to commence on February 13.
Anchor Role Looks Embarrassing Sometimes: Mohammad Rizwan
While speaking to reporters during the ongoing BPL 2023, Mohammad Rizwan spoke about the anchor role that he undertakes in T20s. Rizwan asserted that it is a very difficult and embarrassing role to play.
“It is very difficult role (anchor role in shortest format) and sometimes it looks very embarrassing. What my experience says and what I know is that whenever someone hires me, they demand me to play the anchor role like the way I do in Pakistan. I always assess the condition, assess the opponent and do these kinds of things (anchoring the innings) and sometimes it is embarrassing because in T20 everyone knows we love sixes and they want me to score 60-70 runs from 35-45 balls, but for me to win the match”, Mohammad Rizwan told reporters.
The wicketkeeper-batsman also said that sometimes the situation needs the batters to bat at a slow strike rate in T20s and protect their wickets.
“In T20 cricket, sometimes you can go with slow strike rate because sometimes in T20 you are in a position where they (opposition) are looking to take wickets. You can go slow (when you’ve lost a couple of wickets) but when the team needs you to hit the long ball, you can go with the momentum. For me, assessing the time is important (when to break free) and thankfully, most of the time, I am successful.” Rizwan further said.
Playing for Comilla Victorians in BPL 2023, Rizwan has slammed 125 runs in 4 games so far. He has also hit 1 fifty which was an unbeaten knock of 55 runs. He holds a good average of 62.50 across 4 games. However, his strike rate is just 112.61.
