Asia Cup 2023 has been making a lot of headlines. BCCI has made it clear that they won’t travel to Pakistan for Asia Cup 2023 and has stated that playing cricket in Pakistan is the Indian government’s decision and we all know both nations don’t have friendly relations. PCB had even threatened to pull out of ODI WC 2023 which is staged in India in October-November

According to reports, it is assumed that Pakistan will host their matches except against India, and India’s all matches would be played in UAE.  However, there is no official update regarding the tournament as in the meeting of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC), it was not made clear whether UAE would host the tournament for a record 3rd time (2018, 2022 [T20 Asia Cup], & the upcoming 2023.)

Abdur Rehman on Asia Cup 2023

Abdur Rehman was having an interaction with Nadir Ali on his podcast: ‘Nadir Ali Podcast’ and was asked about Asia Cup 2023.

“Asia Cup should not happen in Dubai. That’s because ICC is under them. All the people who are working for ICC are Indians. India generates 60 to 70 percent of funds. We are not in a position to say no. Even if they don’t come (to Pakistan) we should go because we have to play cricket.” said Abdur Rehman.

Exciting Asia Cup 2023 on Cards

The Asia Cup 2023 is scheduled to take place in September 2023 which would serve as a stepping stone for the ODI WC 2023. PCB would be aware of the fact that if they boycott OD WC 2023 then ICC may ban them from the sport. It would be interesting to see whether the rest of the teams agree on multiple venues (*UAE & Pakistan).

As mentioned by Abdur Rehman, PCB has to agree with ICC’s decision if they want to play cricket. Under the new PCB Chairman Najam Sethi, Pakistani fans would be hoping that they witness cricket in their backyard; where the nation is going through a massive economic crisis.
