AUS vs ENG: David Warner Backed By Mitchell Marsh To Be Australia's Next ODI Captain

David Warner, a divisive batsman, has earned backing to succeed Steve Smith as Australia’s next one-day captain despite his pivotal part in the 2018 sandpaper incident in South Africa. 

Warner, 35, might take over for the retiring Aaron Finch, and Mitchell Marsh, an all-rounder, has given his support to the player they call “Bull.”

‘He’s (Warner) a great leader among our group,’ Marsh said. 

‘As far as all the decisions go, I certainly steer clear of all those conversations. But he’s a great man to have in the squad.’ 

Marsh was given some thought for the part but decided against it. 

‘Probably not to be honest, I’m out of the race,’ he told AAP.

‘The (T20) World Cup is such an exciting prospect for all of us, to worry about that sort of stuff (one-day captaincy) is just not on my radar at the moment.’ 

Despite playing a key role in the notorious sandpaper fiasco of 2018 in South Africa, David Warner has been favoured to become Australia’s next one-day captain. 

Warner has received the support of teammate Mitchell Marsh as a potential successor to Aaron Finch as Australia’s next ODI captain. 

Lifetime Leadership Ban Compulsory To Get Revoked For David Warner’s Captaincy Proposal

Warner would require Cricket Australia to lift his lifetime leadership ban, which is mostly due to the 2018 ball-tampering controversy in South Africa, in order to take the post. 

Warner was thought to be the main instigator on the field at Newlands during the appalling incidents that led to Warner, the then-captain Steve Smith, and batsman Cameron Bancroft receiving suspensions ranging from nine to twelve months for bringing the sport into disgrace. 

Bancroft was exposed on TV cameras while trying to manipulate the ball’s motion with yellow sandpaper he had in his pocket. 

Warner, who was vice-captain at the time, was included in the photographs that went viral. 

Finch also thinks Warner’s lifelong exclusion from California ought to be lifted.

Following the ball-tampering controversy in South Africa, Cricket Australia handed Warner a lifetime leadership suspension (pictured, with wife Candice) 

After their suspension, Smith and Warner returned to the international scene, although they did not manage the squad. 

‘He (Warner) is someone I have played under a few times for Australia when he has had the opportunity to captain,’ he told Triple M. 

‘He has been fantastic. He is an unbelievable tactical captain and someone at the time the lads loved playing under. 

‘Would I like to see (his ban) overturned? Yeah, absolutely. 

‘What he can offer not just now as a player but going forward for him to be able to coach and help the next generation of players coming through is so important. 

‘You do your time, and he has well and truly done that.’ 

Pat Cummins, the Test captain, and Alex Carey, the wicketkeeper, are more options.
