During last night’s final T20I of Australia vs England series, Mitchell Starc almost did a ‘Mankading’ on England skipper Jos Buttler but decided against it at the penultimate moment.

Starc warned Buttler he was backing up too far at an early stage of his superb unbeaten 65 off 41 balls, forcing the England captain. to make absolutely sure he did not leave his ground too early. Buttler has previously been the victim of a ‘Mankad’ at the hands of India’s Ravi Ashwin during an IPL match.

While cricket’s custodians, MCC have recognised the Mankad as run out, Buttler too said that he is not in favour of the dismissal.

“No one wants to see them in the game because they always create such a talking point when it should be about the battle between bat and ball,” Buttler said at the post-match conference.

Mankading, informally named after former India cricketer Vinoo Mankad, has been in the news of late after Deepti Sharma ran out Charlie Dean at the non-striker’s end for leaving her crease too early to hand a 3-0 ODI series sweep in England last month.

No Australian player showed eagerness to press on the matter further

Starc’s decision averted a controversial end to a series where England would surely have completed their first whitewash in any multi-match series in Australia.

It was heartwarming to see that neither Woakes nor Australian captain Aaron Finch showed any appetite afterwards for a repeat of the controversial scenes at the end of England women’s match against India at Lord’s when Deepti Sharma ran out Charlie Dean backing up.
