Former Indian bowler Venkatesh Prasad criticized Matthew Wade’s behaviour, calling it “pathetic,” and expressed outrage at England captain Jos Buttler for not filing an appeal after being dismissed.

The Matthew Wade incident that had taken place just before the game concluded stole the spotlight away from England’s remarkable eight-run victory in the high-scoring thriller on Sunday at the new Optus Stadium.

Wade had avoided what may have been an unusual dismissal for “obstruction of field.” While former Indian bowler Venkatesh Prasad criticized the incident, calling it “pathetic,” he was also incensed that England captain Jos Buttler chose not to challenge the dismissal.

When Australia was chasing 209 and needed 39 runs off the final 22 balls to win the defending T20 world championship, the incident took place in the 17th over of the innings. Mark Wood’s short ball was top-edged by Wade, causing it to strike his helmet and fly straight up into the air.

Wade tried to take a single and moved outside the crease because he didn’t know where the ball had gone. Wade attempted to retake his position, but as Wood rushed to finish the catch, the bowler was prevented from doing so by Wade’s attempt to stick out his left arm. The on-field umpires were spotted having a discussion but with Buttler not making an appeal, Wade survived.

“What a terrible excuse from Jos Buttler to not appeal”: Venkatesh Prasad

Former Indian bowler Venkatesh Prasad’s outrage at England captain Jos Buttler for not filing an appeal after being dismissed.

Venkatesh Prasad was left furious at the entire episode opening that Australia had “cheated” and also lashed out at Buttler for not appealing. “Pathetic, in one word this is Cheating, not in the spirit of the game and Obstructing the field and what a terrible excuse from Jos Buttler to not appeal. The sense of entitlement of these guys is unbelievable,” Venkatesh Prasad tweeted.

When questioned at the news conference after the game why he did not make an appeal, Buttler responded,  “They asked if I wanted to appeal and I said ‘no’. I’ve only just got to Australia so I thought just carry on with the game. “It was hard because I didn’t know what I was appealing for.”

“I could have asked some of the other boys to see if they had a better view but thought I would get on with the game. Maybe I should have asked a few of the lads.”
