Indian National Cricket Team skipper Virat Kohli is now the joint-most successful Indian captain along with Sourav Ganguly in overseas Tests  after Team India registered a historic win in the Boxing Day Test against Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) on Sunday. With the win at the MCG, India have now taken an unassailable 2-1 lead in the four-match series.

Kohli equals Ganguly’s record

Meanwhile, Virat Kohli’s reign as full-time captain began in 2015 after MS Dhoni had stepped down following the series loss in Australia. Under Kohli, India have won five Tests in Sri Lanka, two in Windies, one each in South Africa and England and now two in Australia. On the other hand, Ganguly during his captaincy stint between the year 2000 and 2005, won one Test each in Australia, England, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh, two in Pakistan and West Indies, and three in Zimbabwe.

Moreover, the Boxing Day Test win at the MCG is the 11th away Test win for Kohli in just 24 Tests. On top of that, he became the first Indian to skipper to retain the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia. Previously, India had defeated Australia 2-1 in the four-Test series during their tour of India in 2016/17.

Furthermore, Virat Kohli has won 26 out of the 45 matches he has captained with ten defeats, and nine draws to go with that which gives him a win percentage of 57.78. Second to him is MS Dhoni with 27 wins out of 60 Tests and a win percentage of 45. The Boxing Day Test win was also the second instance when India had won two Tests in Australia. The previous occasion being in 1977/78 when Australia won the 3-2. India had won the third and fourth games on that tour before losing the series in the decider.

The 30-year-old is in sensational form in this year and had added yet another feather in his illustrious cap. However, with the win, India now leads the four-match series 2-1. The final Test match is set to be played in Sydney, starting January 3, 2019.
