Ireland was thrashed in the ODI series against Bangladesh. They lost the series by 0-2 (*2nd ODI was washed out). Ireland is set to clash against Bangladesh for a 3-match T20I series commencing from 27th March. Paul Stirling is going to lead in the absence of Andrew Balbirnie, who is rested. Paul Stirling doesn’t have significant experience of captaining the side where he has led the side 6 times in the T20I format.

Paul Stirling has been a force to reckon with in the franchise circuit as well as for Ireland cricket. All eyes would be on Harry Tector. He is assumed to be the next big thing in world cricket because he has got a wide range of shots. Ireland would be keen to make a statement that they are not done yet as a lot of questions are raised about their team’s dynamics.

Such rotation also allows us to broaden the talent pool- Ireland Head Coach Heinrich Malan

Ireland Head Coach Heinrich Malan was having an interaction with the media & revealed the reason behind Andrew Balbirnie’s absence from T20I Series.

“Andrew was due to take a break from the ODI series against Sri Lanka next month to concentrate on preparation for the upcoming Tests and the all-important World Cup Super League series in May. With the Sri Lankan ODI series now being converted to a second Test Match, he will now be rested from this T20I series instead,” said Heinrich Malan.

“We flagged before the tour that there may be an element of player rotation this year due to the anticipated volume of cricket we will be playing. I see it is an essential part of squad and player management that we give our leading players adequate down time for their physical and mental health. Such rotation also allows us to broaden the talent pool by enabling a wider group of players first-team opportunities.” he added.

Steep Road ahead for Ireland

Bangladesh would be booming with confidence after recently beating a star-studded England cricket team in T20I Series by 3-0. Under the regime of Bangladesh Head Coach Chandika Hathurusingha, the Bangladeshi Tigers have looked like a formidable unit where they rediscovered their mojo.

The pitch at Chattogram most likely would be spin-friendly where once again Ireland batters would be tested. Ireland batters should make sure that they post a score in excess of 140 if they are batting first as we have seen that chasing is quite difficult. It would be interesting to see whether Bangladesh continues to change its batters’ position.
