On Wednesday (20th January), the hosts Bangladesh will face the visitors West Indies at Shere Bangla National Stadium (Mirpur, Dhaka) in the opening game of the three-match ODI series.
This ODI series will be the part of the 2020–23 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Super League. Meanwhile, it will be their first international meeting after the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019, where Bangladesh beat the Caribbean team by 7 wickets at Taunton.
Finally, Bangladesh are returning to the international cricket. Their last international match was against Zimbabwe during Dhaka T20I on 11th March 2020. Due to COVID-19 pandemic, Bangladesh didn’t play a single international match for over last 10 months. But this Asian country is now ready to host West Indies.
This ODI series against West Indies will be Bangladesh’s first ODI series in the 2020–23 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Super League, which is part of the 2023 Men’s Cricket World Cup qualification process. To direct qualify for the next ODI World Cup, this Asian team need to take this ODI series very seriously and win it.
Talking about the present situation, Bangladesh are taking this ODI series very seriously. Though their former captain Mashrafe Mortaza is not in this ODI squad, they have well-balanced and experienced ODI squad. More importantly, one of the top-class all-rounder in international cricket, Shakib Al Hasan has returned to the international cricket after completing his suspension period.
Apart from their regular known international cricketers, there are also three uncapped bowlers in this Bangladesh ODI squad. These three cricketers are off-spinner Mahadi Hasan and pace bowlers Hasan Mahmud and Shoriful Islam.
Tamim Iqbal (C), Shakib Al Hasan, Najmul Hossain Shanto, Mushfiqur Rahim, Mohammad Mithun, Liton Das, Mahmudullah, Afif Hossain, Soumya Sarkar, Taskin Ahmed, Rubel Hossain, Taijul Islam, Mustafizur Rahman, Mehidy Hasan, Mohammad Saifuddin, Mahadi Hasan, Hasan Mahmud, Shoriful Islam
West Indies cricket team, who recently completed New Zealand tour in last December, will play their first ODI since March 2020. They last time played an ODI against Sri Lanka at Pallekele on 1st March 2020.
During this ODI series, just like Bangladesh, West Indies will also play their first series in the 2020–23 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Super League. While it is an important series for them in the contest of direct qualification for the next ODI World Cup, many top Caribbean cricketers decided to not travel in this Asian country due to COVID-19 pandemic.
So, the Caribbean team is very new-looking and inexperienced side. The team game will be very crucial for this side to beat the strong hosts, especially in ODI cricket.
Jason Mohammed (C), Sunil Ambris (vc), Nkrumah Bonner, Joshua Da Silva, Jahmar Hamilton, Chemar Holder, Akeal Hosein, Alzarri Joseph, Kyle Mayers, Andre McCarthy, Kjorn Ottley, Rovman Powell, Raymon Reifer, Keon Harding
In the last few years, Bangladesh national cricket team has continuously proved that their players are majorly confident and comfortable in ODI format. Also, their recent ODI records against West Indies are very positive as they won all the last five ODIs against the Caribbean team.
So, the hosts Bangladesh are clearly favourite for the upcoming ODI against West Indies.
