On Thursday, the Union Sports Minister Anurag Thakur was asked about the absence of the India National Cricket Team and India Women’s National Cricket Team from the Asian Games 2022.

The Asian Games 2022 was originally scheduled to take place from September 10 to 25 in Hangzhou, China, but it has been postponed to 2023 due to rising COVID-19 cases in the country. The new dates for the 19th edition of the Asian Games have not yet been announced.

Cricket was set to be played in the T20 format at the Asian Games for the first time since 2014. However, both India National Cricket Team and India Women’s National Cricket Team were set to skip the Asian Games due to prior commitments.

On Thursday, India Today asked Thakur about Indian cricket’s absence from the Asian Games, Thakur replied: “BCCI has to answer.”

Notably, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had not sent teams for the 2010 and 2014 Asian Games, the only two occasions when cricket was featured at the Asian Games.

Earlier this year, BCCI Secretary Jay Shah said that the decision to send teams to the Asian Games will be taken on the basis of existing commitments.

“As far as the Asian Games in Hangzhou is concerned, a final decision on whether to send men’s and women’s teams will be taken later and based on our existing commitments,” he said.

Also, BCCI had hinted that the bilateral series will be given preference over anything else.

“The BCCI has always stood by member boards and helped them in these difficult times. The board firmly believes in honouring its bilateral commitments.”
