The Board of Control for Cricket in India finalised the base price as INR 400 crore by taking into account the value of the costliest IPL franchise that was sold back in 2007-08.

Notably, the Mumbai franchise was sold to Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) for $111.9 million (approx. Rs 446 crore) at INR 40 / dollar, which made it the most expensive team to be sold in the league.

“The benchmark had to be set somewhere and the BCCI had been gathering a bit of market intelligence on this, keeping in mind the demand and market interest,” those in the know of developments said, as quoted by News18.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India is expecting the Women’s IPL franchise to be sold between INR 1000-1500 crore, or even more, depending on the kind of interest the auction generates once the tender document is out. Overall, BCCI might be looking to generate INR 6000-8000 crore from the sale of Women’s IPL franchises.

“The winning franchise will pay the ownership fees to the BCCI over a period of five years in equal instalments and continue to own the property for perpetuity, like in the men’s IPL,” the source said.

Earlier, in an interaction with News18 in Kolkata, India Women’s National Cricket Team captain Harmanpreet Kaur was asked about the impact of Women’s IPL on the players. She responded:

“The women’s IPL is something we are looking forward to. It will be a good experience, especially for the domestic players who are good but were not getting the chance to play at the international level.

“This is a great platform for them and if they perform well, they will definitely get picked for the national side. They are also going to share the dressing room with overseas players and when you play with them, your competence goes high as well. You’re definitely going to learn great things from them.”
