Former England skipper Eoin Morgan hailed all-rounder, Ben Stokes, as a true leader following the latter’s retirement from ODIs on Tuesday.

Stokes confirmed that the match against South Africa at Chester-le-Street would be his final ODI. He had figures of 0/44 in 5 overs and scored a paltry 5 runs in his retirement game. Speaking about the all-rounder, Morgan said it was sad for Stokes to retire this early.

England will miss his all-round contribution — on the field and in the changing room. Possibly more so in the changing room. He is a true leader who drags people with him and makes people better players by making them believe anything is possible” he said.

It was a huge pleasure to be able to take the field with him for such a long time and for him to retire from this form at 31 years of age is incredibly sad,” Morgan told Sky Sports after Stokes’ final ODI.

“He was one of the leaders in that group that really stood up for everyone” – Mark Wood on Ben Stokes

Fast bowler Mark Wood labelled  Stokes as a legend in the 50-over format. He pointed out the heroics in the 2019 ODI World Cup final against New Zealand, where Stokes single-handedly dragged England into the game during the run chase.

I think Ben will go down as a legend in this format. He won the World Cup in 2019 and it’s hard to forget that. He has put so much into it, he was one of the leaders in that group that really stood up for everyone.

It’s sad he didn’t get a big score today but he was well appreciated by the crowd. It was great for him he got the ovation he did but it’s a sad day. I’m sad that I won’t play with him in this format again,” Wood said.

Stokes will continue to play in T20Is and domestic formats. He is the captain of the Test side and has already started off well, winning four out of four games since taking over from Joe Root.
