Cricket Bats Made From Bamboo Have Larger Sweet Spot And Is More Sustainable: Cambridge University Study

The traditional English willow utilized for the manufacturing of the cricket bats seems to have strong competition now. According to a research by the United Kingdom, bats constructed from bamboo are not only a match for willow but also possesses a larger sweet-spot and more recognized for its durability. Dr Darshil Shah of Cambridge Centre for Natural Material Innovation has spoken more on the same.

According to the study by Cambridge University, bamboo is 22 per cent stiffer than willow and the ball is slated to travel a farther distance after striking it. Furthermore, the sweet spots on these bats are much superior. A research published in the Journal of Sports Engineering and Technology hinted that a cricket bat could be manufactured from laminated bamboo and that it has a significantly higher density than the one made from a traditional willow.

Dr Darshil Shah remarked that it’s a dream bat as the sweet spot of the bamboo bat makes it comfortable to hit a four off even a yorker and enables it to play more exciting strokes. Shah also revealed that it is also prevalent in countries like China, Japan, and South America that are starting to take up cricket.

“This is a batsman’s dream. The sweet spot on a bamboo bat makes it much easier to hit a four off a yorker for starters, but it’s exciting for all kinds of strokes. It is also very prevalent in countries that are taking up cricket such as China, Japan, South America as well,” Shah said as quoted by Guardian.

Laminated bamboo will enable cricket to become a more sustainable sport: Study

Further studies have also claimed that cricket bats made from laminated bamboo will enable to become the sport more sustainable and increase the global appeal.

“The researchers also claim that using laminated bamboo will enable cricket become a more sustainable sport and also increase its global appeal. The use of laminated bamboo could enable cricket to become a more sustainable sport, in the face of decreasing willow supplies and an increasing demand for bats due to the global outreach of the game,” the research revealed as quoted by News18.
