Cricket Tasmania has opened its doors for former Australia Test skipper Tim Paine to join their coaching staff as the player remains uncertain about his future of playing cricket again for the Australian national team.

Ahead of the Ashes 2021-22 against England at home, Paine stepped down from Australia’s red-ball captaincy after his ‘sexting controversy’ with an ex-Cricket Tasmania co-worker was revealed in the public domain.

It has been more than a year since Paine played his last competitive cricket match for Tasmania in a Sheffield Shield match against Western Australia.

Tim Paine has got coaching credentials: Jeff Vaughan

Newly-appointed Tasmania Tigers head coach Jeff Vaughan, who penned a five-year deal on Thursday to return as head of the men’s program, said Paine has the ability and skills required for a suitable coach. The former South Australian batter said he is unsure of Paine’s future plans.

“Tim has been a wonderful leader in this program and I wish him all the best wherever (his future) goes, whether it’s in the playing sphere, or outside of cricket,” Vaughan was quoted as saying by the news agency Australian Associated Press.

“I think (Paine has) got coaching credentials, a coaching skill set. I haven’t spoken to him for quite some time about it. I know that coaching was something he has spoken about post his career. We’re yet to understand when is post-career,” he added.

The biggest thing for Tim is to work out his future: Cricket Tasmania CEO

Cricket Tasmania CEO Dominic Baker said the state cricket association will always support the Australian wicketkeeper-batter but the player will himself need to chalk out his plans on whether he wants to move on from playing and take the coaching role.

“This organisation has been a big supporter of Tim’s and Tim has been a big supporter of this organization,” Baker said.

“That hasn’t wavered right through the last 12 months. We’ll be here as an organization to continue to support him but he’s got to work those things (his future) out for himself.

“There may or may not be opportunities for him coming up. The biggest thing for Tim is to work out what his next stage of life looks like,” he added.

In the latest court hearing, Paine alleged that the former Cricket Tasmania receptionist had also sent him explicit messages.
