Pat Cummins Has Got A Very Good Cricketing Brain – David Warner Backs The Pacer As A Future Captain

Opener David Warner feels that spearhead pacer and vice-captain, Pat Cummins is a good choice to lead Australia in the future as both Tim Paine, 36, and Aaron Finch, 34, have entered into the twilight of their careers.

Pat Cummins, who will turn 28 this May, is the vice-captain of the national team across formats is amongst the leading fast bowlers in the world – Cummins has been at the top of the ICC bowlers ranking for more than two years now and is attributed as a shrewd and hard-worker.

“Pat is doing a great job here with NSW … he’s vice-captain for Australia, He’s been learning the role, he’s got a very good cricket brain,” David Warner said.

David Warner defends Steve Smith’s comments

A couple of weeks ago, Pat Cummins led the New South Wales side, which included the likes of Steve Smith and Moises Henriques, to a victory in a domestic game. Former captain, Steve Smith, however, doesn’t concur with the thoughts of having a fast bowler as a captain of the team – Cummins himself doesn’t play all-year around and is rested from plenty of limited-overs matches to remain fresh and fit.

“I think being a fast bowler, it would be tough. But that’s not for me to really answer,” Steve Smith said on SEN.

“He was good. Pretty easy day, I think today. I don’t think there was too much to do. Not a tough day, but did good on his first day,” Smith said after the game.

David Warner understands the comments made by Smith, which didn’t go down well with people who thought the former skipper was not encouraging the pacer, and indeed more so with Smith now eligible for leading Australia again. David Warner defended Smith saying that pacers do have a heavy workload to manage, and that’s what he meant.

“I did see Steve (Smith)’s comments about him being a fast bowler. I understand where Steve’s coming from. It can be quite challenging. If you’re out there in a Test match and you’ve bowled x overs and been out there all day, it could be quite challenging. It’s up to the board … it’s not my place to talk about who will be the captain or who I feel would be the best person,” the left-handed opener added.
