Australian batsman David Warner revealed the moment when he was dropped from Australia’s team in the 2013 Ashes.

In 2013, Warner was involved in a altercation with current England Test captain Joe Root a day after Australia lost to England in the 2013 Champions Trophy group stage game.

Warner had attacked Root while he was drinking with his teammates at the Walkabout Bar in Birmingham. Warner thought that Root was impersonating South Africa batsman Hashim Amla while wearing a false beard.

Warner was fined almost GBP 7,000 and suspended from all forms of cricket up to the 2013 Ashes Test series against England.

Warner was dropped from the first two Tests of the series but played the last three matches, scoring 138 from six innings at an average of 23.

David Warner mentions his turning point of his career

The Australian opener revealed that he was told that he wasn’t hitting the ball well in the net sessions and they had to drop him. Warner returned to form very soon as he scored 193 against South Africa A in a practice match.

“I think that period in 2013, I think where I got dropped from the first two Ashes Tests in England, after the Joe Root saga that happened, and I went to Africa and I think I scored 180 or 190-odd,” Warner said on The Brett Lee podcast.

“I came back and I still to this day laugh because I was told I wasn’t hitting the ball well enough in the nets to be selected. And I said to Rod Marsh (selector) at the time, ‘Mate, have you ever watched a net I’ve batted in because I’ve never batted well in the nets? I thought that you’ve got another 10 years or so in you, this is in 2013, and if I don’t pull my head in here it could be taken away from me in the next six months and I think that was a turning point,” Warner remembered.

“I got in touch with Candice (Warner’s future wife), I had two or three mates come over and take me under their wing, and said this is what life’s about, something just switched and I said you know what, I’m going to give this a real crack,” he added.

Warner was part of Australia’s phenomenal 4-0 Ashes triumph over England, he scored 273 runs from eight innings at an average of 34.12.
