The Cricket West Indies (CWI) will make a decision on Friday regarding if and when the second ODI against Australia will be replayed after it was suspended on Thursday minutes before the first ball was supposed to be bowled due to a non-playing West Indies member testing positive for COVID-19 in Barbados.

The news of a host member returning a positive test came after the toss had been done – the coin fell in favour of the visitors who elected to bat first and handed Riley Meredith his debut cap – and the match was soon suspended.

Then both squads, match officials, and broadcasting crew were placed into isolation at the hotel. They all have been in a bio-secure bubble together so far.

Now the second and the third ODI, slated for Saturday, are in doubt. CWI are expected to make announcements regarding the same on Friday.

“This decision was taken after the toss at Kensington Oval once the (positive COVID-19 test) result was known and confirmed by (Barbados) Ministry of Health officials,” Johnny Grave, the Cricket West Indies CEO, said.

“Everyone will be re-tested later today. In the meantime everyone will remain in isolation in their rooms until those PCR test results are confirmed.

“We’ll make a further decision on when the match can be replayed at a later date once all the test results are back in by hopefully tomorrow (Friday) morning,” he added.

The small island of Barbados has reported 50 new cases of the virus over the past three days, with 173 people currently in isolation. There have been 4,319 cases since the start of the pandemic and the overall death figure stands at 48.

This has also added uncertainty about Australia’s upcoming tour to Bangladesh which was confirmed on Thursday. They will arrive in Dhaka on July 29 to play five T20Is against Bangladesh, from August 3 to 9. They will be subjected to a three-day quarantine period in Dhaka; but now if any of their contingent members also returns a positive test, the quarantine period could be modified.

West Indies are due to host Pakistan in a five-match T20I series, starting July 27. followed by two Tests.
