Dewald Brevis Should Be Given Time And The Space To Hone His Game Within The System – Temba Bavuma

South Africa white-ball captain Temba Bavuma has said that the young Proteas sensation Dewald Brevis, famously known as ‘Baby AB’, needs to be given time and space to hone his skills before international call-up.

Dewald Brevis had scored 506 runs in the ICC Under-19 World Cup 2022 at an average of 84.33 and he finished as the highest run-getter in the marquee tournament and with the ball, he bagged seven wickets. Also, he was awarded the Player of the Tournament for his sensational performance.

The 19-year-old also broke the record for the most runs scored in a single edition of the U-19 World Cup, which was previously held by Shikhar Dhawan, who scored 505 in the 2004 edition.

After his brilliant performance in the ICC Under-19 World Cup, he was bought by Mumbai Indians (MI) for INR 3 crore at the Indian Premier League 2022 mega auction. He played 7 games for the five-time champions in the IPL 2022 and scored 161 runs at an average of 23.0 and a strike rate of 142.5.

While talking about Dewald Brevis’ international call-up, Temba Bavuma said that the youngster has not played first-class cricket and playing him directly at the international level would put a lot of pressure on him.

“In all fairness to him, he hasn’t played a first-class game. In terms of expectations but also allowing the boy to grow within his game, it would be fair to allow him to play a couple of first-class games where he can really get an understanding of his game,” Bavuma was quoted as saying by news agency PTI.

“It will be a lot of pressure to throw him into the international set-up and expect him to make plays. He will be treated like any other exciting young prospect that comes onto the scene.”

“He should be given time and the space to hone his game within the system and ease into the international side of things,” the South African white-ball captain added.
