Former Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir gave a befitting reply on being asked why he works in the Indian Premier League (IPL) despite working as an MP from the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) for the East Delhi Constituency.

Gambhir joined one of the two new franchises, Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), ahead of the IPL 2022 season as a mentor. They finished in 3rd place and qualified for the Eliminator before losing to Royal Challengers Bangalore.

After the conclusion of the league, Gambhir took part in a conference where he was asked about his constant association with the cash-rich league either as an analyst, a commentator, or a direct relationship with a franchise.

Why I commentate in IPL or work in it is because I spend INR 25 lakh every month to feed 5000 people. This translates to roughly 2.75 crores per year. I’ve also spent INR 25 lakh to build a library.”

I spend all of this money from my own pocket and not from the MPLAD fund. The MPLAD fund doesn’t run my kitchen or other things that I do. I don’t have a tree in my house from where I can pluck money either,” Gambhir said at the media conference.

Gambhir said everything he has been doing is for the welfare of the people and that he has no shame in admitting that he is associated with the IPL considering his goal is to help others financially.

Only because I work, am I able to feed those 5000 people or establish that library. I have no shame in saying that I do commentary and work in the IPL. All of this that I do has an ultimate goal,” he added.
