Senior England pacer Stuart Broad has expressed his concerns regarding the Ashes later in the year in Australia as the series is in danger of getting postponed, even cancelled. The players fear that their families might not be allowed to travel due to Australia’s stringent Covid-19 restrictions, or if they are, then they would have to undergo a 14-day quarantine period.

Some senior players have even said they may pull out of the tour. Multi-format players like Jos Buttler, Mark Wood, Ben Stokes would then have to go months in the bio bubble away from their families as they would play in the T20 World Cup prior to the Ashes.

Stuart Broad said that the ECB will do everything in its power to make things easier for the England players and their families, but it is the Australian government that will have the final say in this matter. He reckons players need to be in the right state of mind to perform at the highest level.

“I believe the ECB will do everything in their power to get the Ashes on this winter, but I think the Australian Government is key,” Stuart Broad told mirror.co.uk.

“While we have to be realistic as players – if there are 40,000 Australians that can’t get back in the country, we can’t expect to avoid quarantine and live completely freely – there has to be a balance struck. Things need to be in place for England to have the chance to perform at the highest level,” he added.

Wouldn’t want to go without seeing my kids for several months: Stuart Broad

Stuart Broad, who is currently missing the series against India due to a calf injury, felt it would be tough for players to be away from their children for a long time. But at the same time, he understands that the Ashes is “too valuable” to be “compromised”.

“If I had kids, I think it would be tough for them to spend 14 days in a hotel room quarantining. Equally, I wouldn’t want to go without seeing them for several months either.

“The Ashes is too valuable to Australia as a country, let alone Cricket Australia, for a compromise not to be struck,” said the 149-Test veteran pacer.
