Former all-rounder Irfan Pathan backs Team India to win the now-cancelled fifth Test against England whenever it takes place. He also lauded Virat Kohli’s side for their brilliant performances in the summer which now sees them with a 2-1 lead after four games.

The fifth and the last Test of the series, which was to be held in Manchester from Friday, was postponed on the morning of the game after the Indian players expressed apprehensions about taking the field amid the covid-19 scare in their dressing room.

After head coach Ravi Shastri, bowling coach Bharat Arun and fielding coach R Sridhar – all of whom are currently isolating in London – assistant physio Yogesh Parmar had returned a positive Covid-19 test on Wednesday. The Indian players have been worried since Parmar, being the physio, had been in close contact with them.

Irfan Pathan reckons India will be the favourites for the game if and when it happens.

“India showed great character & fighting spirit throughout the series. Giving it back to them with top level of skills was something to be proud of this team. I’m sure India will be the favourites whenever this ‘postponed’ match will be held,” Irfan Pathan tweeted.

BCCI offers to reschedule the fifth Test:

Following the cancellation of the fifth and last Test of the series, which India lead 2-1 currently, the BCCI presented an offer to the ECB for playing the Test later on, while also stating that it was “jointly decided” by the two boards to call off the game.

“The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) along with the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) have jointly decided to call off the 5th Test Match scheduled at Manchester in ongoing India’s tour of England 2021,” the BCCI said in a statement.

“In lieu of the strong relationship between BCCI and ECB, the BCCI has offered to ECB a rescheduling of the cancelled Test match. Both the Boards will work towards finding a window to reschedule this Test match.”

The series, for now, stands at 2-1 as both the boards and the ICC continue their talks regarding the fate of the fifth Test.

Meanwhile, the Chennai Super Kings and the Mumbai Indians are making arrangements to have their players in the UAE as soon as possible for the second half of the IPL 2021, which resumes on September 19.
