Former Indian cricketer Maninder Singh was surprised by India‘s decision to bat first after winning the toss and blasted them for having enough experience to figure out the conditions. India did not have the best of starts with losing KL Rahul in the first over and it was all England from there as they dominated the entire day.

India’s decision to bat first after winning the toss backfired as they were all out for just 78 registering their ninth-lowest score in tests. The England bowlers learned from the mistakes and produced a stunning performance while the England batters showed up in an excellent fight to end the day on 120 for no loss with a lead of 42 runs.

Maninder Singh Feels India Should Have Bowled Looking At The Overcast Conditions

Maninder Singh recalled Broad’s tweet of the ball swinging around for just the first hours and it happened exactly as well. He stated that India should have changed their decision from batting first after looking at the overcast conditions. The ball seemed for the English bowlers in the first few hours while the Indian bowlers did not get anything off the pitch.

“Stuart Broad tweeted about this too that the ball only seams around for the first four hours and that’s the best time to bowl. I also believe that you should bat first after winning the toss but you should look at the conditions as well. And when you saw the overcast conditions, you should have changed the decision you perhaps took last night.” Maninder Singh On ESPN Cricinfo

Maninder Singh Reveals The Batting Weakness India Are Accustomed To

Maninder Singh felt that India’s batting woes in the middle order should have surely prompted the captain and the coach to bowl first. He called the decision to bat first a “huge blunder” relating to the experience Virat and Ravi Shastri have.

“The issue I have is how Virat Kohli, who is so experienced and then Ravi Shastri, who played and won at this ground in 1986, played so much county cricket, made such a huge blunder? That, too, after knowing that neither he (Virat Kohli) himself nor Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane are in good form… that’s why I believed they should have bowled first after winning the toss.” Maninder Singh added

The England team has already taken a big stride in the test and they are well on their way for a comeback in this series.
