Former India wicketkeeper Deep Dasgupta opined that the management should be patient with Mohammed Siraj going forward as they have done with Rishabh Pant. While the pacer continues to take giant strides in his Test career – he has now eclipsed Umesh Yadav in the pecking order – he needs to be handled with care.

Siraj was the pick of the bowler in England’s first innings at Lord’s where he bagged four English batsmen, including the key wicket of half-centurion Jonny Bairstow. The Hyderabad pacer was India’s leading wicket-taker on the Australia tour, where picked his maiden five-fer in Brisbane.

Citing the example of Pant, Deep Dasgupta reckoned since Siraj also has an attacking mindset similar to Pant, he too, needs that extra caution from the management.

“Mohammed Siraj was standout. The thing I like about Siraj is that he, according to me, is the bowling avatar of Rishabh Pant. He has an attacking mindset like Pant. There will be days or spells where he might leak runs. But as I say for Rishabh Pant that you need to be patient with him, same applies to Mohammed Siraj,” Deep Dasgupta said in his YouTube video.

Deep Dasgupta further stated that even if Siraj leaks runs at the time – as he bowls plenty of full-length deliveries in search of wickets – he should be backed and encouraged.

“Even if he gives away runs, there is a need to be patient because his attacking mindset is his speciality. There might be days or spells where he would frustrate you but you will need to stay patient and encourage him,” concluded the former wicketkeeper.

Speaking of the Lord’s Test, the game is tantalisingly poised for a humdinger. At stumps on Day 4, India’s total is 181/6, and the lead is 154. Rishabh Pant would be looking to score some quick and crucial runs, but he would be up against James Anderson bowling with a new ball.
