Former India player Jatin Paranjape tweeted that his family was very touched by the gesture of the Indian cricket team who wore black armbands in tribute and memory of his father, legendary coach Vasoo Paranjape.

Vasoo Paranjape passed away on August 31 at the age of 82. He played 29 First-Class games for Mumbai from 1956-1970 but became more popular for his coaching after ending his cricketing career. He mentored and coached several other prominent cricketers from Mumbai, including legendary Sunil Gavaskar, Dilip Vengsarkar, and current India opener Rohit Sharma.

He even worked closely with the likes of Rahul Dravid, Sourav Ganguly, and Yuvraj Singh and continued to coach young and budding cricketers into late years. Paranjape was also one of the first set of coaches in the National Cricket Academy when it was instated in 2000.

Thanks to his technical know-how and excellent man-management skills, he was appointed Director of Coaching in the ’80s by the board and was a head coach of camps for junior cricketers.

Meanwhile, Virat Kohli and co. were asked to bat first after Joe Root won the toss and chose to bowl first on a green looking pitch. The hosts made two changes to their playing XI as Chris Woakes came in for Sam Curran and Ollie Pope replaced Jos Buttler.

For India, Umesh Yadav came in for Ishant Sharma and Shardul Thakur replaced Mohammad Shami, both of whom are carrying niggles. The most surprising thing was the exclusion of off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin which led to much uproar on social media.
