“He’s An Unbelievable Tactical Captain”– Aaron Finch Throws His Weight Behind David Warner To Captain Australia In ODIs

Australia National Cricket Team T20I captain Aaron Finch has thrown his weight behind veteran opening batsman David Warner to captain Australia National Cricket Team in ODIs following his retirement from the 50-over format.

Aaron Finch, who was appointed as the skipper in April 2019, officially retired from ODI cricket after the 3-0 whitewash over New Zealand in Cairns. However, the 35-year-old will be available to lead his side in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 at home next month.

When asked whether he would like to see Warner lead Team Australia in ODIs, Finch said that he is a fantastic and an “unbelievable tactical captain”.

“I think CA (Cricket Australia) I think are revisiting what that looks like. He’s someone I’ve played under a few times for Australia when he’s had the opportunity to captain, and he’s been fantastic. He’s an unbelievable tactical captain and someone who at the time the guys loved playing under,” Finch said on Triple M radio.

“I’m not 100 per cent sure of what CA’s position is on it. But would I like to see it overturned? (Yes) … he’s someone who, you do your time and he’s well and truly done that I think.”

While talking about the possibility of the Test captain Pat Cummins being appointed as the ODI captain, Finch said:

“I think (Smith) captained a Test match in Adelaide after Pat was out with Covid, so I think that’s all been put to bed I think it’s pretty hard (for a fast bowler) but if anyone can manage it, it would be Pat.”

David Warner Received Lifetime Leadership Ban After His Involvement In Sandpapergate Scandal

In March 2018, during the third Test match of the series between Australia National Cricket Team and South Africa National Cricket at the Newlands in Cape Town, Australian player Cameron Bancroft was caught by television cameras trying to rough up one side of the ball with sandpaper.

Then Australia captain Steve Smith and vice-captain David Warner were found to be involved in the ball-tampering scandal, famously known as the Sandpapergate scandal, and they received unprecedented sanctions from Cricket Australia (CA).

Steve Smith and David Warner were banned for 12 months each from international and domestic cricket while Cameron Bancroft was banned for 9 months.

Also, both Smith and Warner were stripped of all leadership entitlements with Smith, who is currently Australia’s Test vice-captain, receiving a two-year leadership ban and Warner receiving a lifetime leadership ban.

Prior to Finch’s recent comments, Cricket Australia (CA) chairperson Lachlan Henderson in an official statement said:

“The ban on David being appointed to a leadership position in Australian cricket remains in place.

“David has shown strong leadership both on and off field in recent seasons and his decision to play in the BBL (the Big Bash League) for the next two years reflects his ongoing commitment to cricket in Australia.

“The CA Board welcomes David’s wish to discuss his leadership status with directors and this will be arranged at a convenient time for both parties.”
