Newly-appointed Australian Men’s Test Captain Pat Cummins has said that he is honoured, privileged and excited to become the new skipper of the team in the longest format of the game.

Pat Cummins is the 47th Aussie Test captain and he is also the first pacer to lead Australia in Test cricket in the last 65 years. Other than Cummins, Ray Lindwall’s is the pacer who has led Australia’s Test team in just one game in 1956.

Talking about Cummins, Cricket Australia chief executive Nick Hockley said:

Pat is an outstanding player and leader, He has earned enormous respect from his teammates and from all corners of the game for his attitude and achievements, both on and off the field.”

Former skipper Steve Smith has also made a comeback in the leadership role after getting banned from cricket following the ball-tampering scandal in South Africa in 2018 as Smith has been named as permanent vice-captain of the Test team.

Meanwhile, Cummins said that he is lucky to have Steve Smith as his deputy. Cummins on his official Twitter handle wrote:

I feel incredibly honoured, privileged and excited to be named the Australian Men’s Test Captain. I’ll be trying my best and can’t wait to get started at the Gabba in a couple of weeks! Also very lucky to have my man Steve Smith alongside me as VC.”

Pat Cummins and Steve Smith will be leading the team in the marquee Ashes 2021-22 series which will begin from December 8 at the iconic Gabba, Brisbane.

Meanwhile, former Australian Test captain Tim Paine who stepped down from his role following the sexting scandal has decided to take an ” indefinite mental health break” from cricket.

Confirming that @tdpaine36 is stepping away from cricket for an indefinite mental health break,” Paine’s manager James Henderson wrote in a social media post.

“We are extremely concerned for his and (wife) Bonnie’s well-being and will be making no further comment at this time,” he added.
