The International Cricket Council, in a statement, said that the pitch had been rated ‘poor’ due to the fact that the match ended within three days, but the BCCI had argued that the pitch had been prepared in accordance with the ICC’s guidelines and that the match had ended due to the quality of the bowling from both sides.

The International Cricket Council said that it had taken into consideration the BCCI’s appeal and the fact that the pitch had been prepared in accordance with the guidelines and had decided to change the rating to ‘below average’. The ICC also said that the demerit points awarded to the pitch had been revoked.

An ICC appeal panel comprised of Wasim Khan, ICC General Manager – Cricket, and Roger Harper, ICC Men’s Cricket Committee Member, evaluated the Test footage.

Both agreed that, while the Match Referee had followed the standards outlined in Appendix A of the Pitch Monitoring Procedure, there was not enough excessive variable bounce to warrant the ‘poor’ grade.

As a result, the tribunal determined that the pitch should be classified ‘below average,’ which means that the Holkar Stadium will receive only one demerit point rather than the original three.

ICC changes Indore pitch’s ‘poor’ rating for India vs Australia Test match:

The International Cricket Council (ICC) had initially rated the pitch as “poor” after the third Test, which ended in a draw. However, following the BCCI’s appeal, the ICC upgraded the rating to “below average”.  The BCCI had also argued that the pitch was not dangerous and that the game was played in a fair and competitive manner. The ICC accepted this argument and upgraded the rating.

The pitch used in the third Test in Indore favored spinners, with 14 wickets falling on the opening day. Spinners took 26 of the 31 wickets taken in the entire contest.

The Test lasted two days and one session, with Australia emerging victors to secure their place in the ICC World Test Championship Final. India had to wait a few days longer to secure their position in the Final, which was secured when New Zealand defeated Sri Lanka in the first Test in Christchurch.
