ICC Introduces 'Player Of The Month' Award, 5 Indians Nominated

The International Cricket Council (ICC), on Wednesday, has introduced the ICC Player of the Month awards for the male and female cricketers. Along with the ICC Voting Academy comprising of former players, broadcasters, and journalists across the world, fans will also be able to cast their votes for the ICC Men’s Player of the Month and ICC Women’s Player of the Month for January 2021.

Three nominees in each category will be selected by the ICC Awards Nominations Committee based on “on-field performances and overall achievements” for the month throughout the year. The Voting Academy has a 90% share of the vote. A 10% share of the vote is given to the fans who are registered with the ICC and will submit their votes via the ICC website. The winners will be announced every second Monday of the month on the ICC’s digital channels.

“The ICC Player of the Month is a great way to connect with fans of the sport and celebrate performances of their favourite players through the year. It gives us all an opportunity to acknowledge world class performances on the field by male and female cricketers and they have been in abundance throughout January,” Geoff Allardice, ICC General Manager – Cricket said in a statement released by the governing body.

5 Indians nominated for the ICC Player of the Month award

From the Indian squad which recently won the Test series in Australia, 5 players have been nominated for this new program. Out of the 4 Tests, 2 were played in the month of  January. Mohammed Siraj, Washington Sundar, T. Natarajan, Rishabh Pant, and Ravichandran Ashwin are the ones who are nominated from India.

Siraj took 13 wickets in 3 Tests while Rishabh Pant was India’s leading run-scorer in the series, and T Natarajan made impressive debuts in all thee formats Down Under.

Afghanistan’s Rahmanullah Gurbaz, England skipper, Joe Root, Steve Smith from Australia, South Africa Women’s all-rounder Marizanne Kapp, and Nadine de Klerk along with Nida Dar from Pakistan are included as contenders for the award.
