Indian National Cricket Team’s fast bowler Mohammed Shami has gone through a lot of transition in the last 18 months. From being irregular in the limited overs sie to be in the ICC World Cup 2019 squad, Shami has gone through a lot. If one person has to be credited for the Bengal pacer’s rise, it has to go to conditioning coach Shankar Basu. Basu himself admitted it as his biggest achievement during a media interaction.

Sham has been my biggest achievement: Basu

A new and improved Mohammed Shami didn’t miss a single Test match last season due to injury and maintained his intensity throughout. Since missing the Test against Afghanistan after failing the yo-yo test, Shami has been lethal across the formats. Earlier this year, he became the first India pacer to win a player of the series award against Australia in Down Under. The Bengal cricketer also had a good outing in the IPL for the Kings XI Punjab despite his team doing poorly.

Shankar Basu has been the chief architect behind Mohammed Shami turnaround. He also considered Shami as his most significant achievement. Basu further mentioned that Shami had testing last year due to personal issues and fitness problems, but he came back strong.

“And come to think of it, he failed a fitness test last year and also had some issues in his personal life. Once he came back, he started training with a vengeance. I had told Shami that there is no point of training hard for 20 days. You have to train consistently. Now training is his lifestyle. Look at how his pace never drops even in the final test of a five-game series,” Basu told PTI.

Speaking about the Indian captain, Virat Kohli, Shankar Basu elucidated that Virat is ready to do the dull stuff day in and day out and this is what makes him so unique. Another player who has shown remarkable improvement is Jasprit Bumrah. Basu praised him for raising the bar to an altogether different level.

“Virat is any teacher’s delight. His biggest attribute is that he is ready to do boring stuff every single day of the year. Bumrah wasn’t one of the fittest guys when he came into the team. Today he is in that top bracket due to his sheer hard work, proper diet, good sleeping pattern,” Basu concluded.
