Former England captain Andrew Strauss was quick to admit his concerns over the way England had batted in the first innings against India and expressed his displeasure. England struggled to get going in the first innings, and Joe Root was in the only limelight in the innings scoring a hard-fought half-century.

No other batsmen got to a score above 30 and eventually, England was bowled out for a mere score of 183 in their first innings at Trent Bridge. This has been England’s pattern of getting dismissed in the last few outings and they will clearly have to work a lot on their batting efforts.

“It’s Very Hard Not To Feel Dejected If You Are An England Fan” – Andrew Strauss

Andrew Strauss mentioned that the Indian bowlers had a great outing on the first day and notified the pressure build-up from all ends of the Indian bowling attack. He expressed his disappointment over watching the England batsmen play and felt sorry for the England fans too. He added that the scars inside the batting lineup are starting to widen up.

“I thought that Indian bowlers were outstanding today. Hunted in packs and they were very accurate, they built pressure on England batsmen. It’s very hard not to feel dejected if you are an England fan right now. Those issues we have had about batting come right to the surface on Day 1 of the series.

There’s still a lot of cricket obviously to be played in this Test match but the scars are very wide open now,” Andrew Strauss reckoned.

Andrew Strauss Feels England Batsmen Should Have Capitalised On The Start

England had as many as three batsmen getting starts in the form of Dom Sibley, Jonny Bairstow, and Zak Crawley but none of them got to a big score and Strauss noted that England needs to work on that aspect. He added that exposing the new batsmen isn’t going to help England’s cause and reckoned that it has been the same story for the last 18 months.

“It is a recurring thing. We have seen a lot of this over the last 18 months. What I struggle with is these batsmen got in and then got out. You look at Sibley, who battled hard for 18, you look at Crawley who got 27, you look at Bairstow who got 29. They got out and then new batsmen come in and that gives Indian bowlers something to work with,” he added.
