India captain Virat Kohli talked about the importance of regular breaks cricketers need while playing in the bio-bubble for a long time. The Indian players have been in some sort of bubble since cricket began in the pandemic era last year, although, players have been given rest from time to time.

Virat Kohli, who has stepped down as the T20I captain to manage his workload, was rested from the T20I series and first Test against New Zealand, which ended in a draw in Kanpur, and now returns to lead the side the second Test in Mumbai, starting Friday.

The 33-year-old said it was vital for him to have a break and also practice away from the limelight.

“Important to refresh mentally. To practice in a place where we didn’t have a structured environment or with no cameras makes a huge difference.

“To maintain the quality we must consider such things. Managing workload is more important from the mental point of view,” Virat Kohli said in the pre-match press conference in Mumbai.

Rohit Sharma, Rishabh Pant, Jasprit Bumrah, and Mohammed Shami were rested for both Tests.

We have made changes in the past looking at combinations: Virat Kohli

Virat Kohli and new coach Rahul Dravid have a massive task at hand: deciding who makes way for the captain. Shreyas Iyer has made it nigh impossible for the management to drop him after he became the first Indian batsman to hit a century and fifty on Test debut.

However, dropping any of the senior cricketers between Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane would be a bold move.

Without giving away anything, the skipper asserted that the management will make the decision based on what is best for the team.

“You have to understand the situation of where the team is placed, you have to understand where individuals stand. You have to communicate well, speak to the individuals and approach them in a way, explain things clearly.

“We have made changes in the past looking at combinations, we have explained to individuals and they have understood our mindset behind going in with certain combinations,” Virat Kohli said.

After the New Zealand series, India are scheduled to fly to South Africa. However, that could be delayed amid the threats posed by the new variant of Covid-19, Omicron.
