KL Rahul was happy to contribute to the team’s cause in the first Test but he would have been thoroughly disappointed after missing out on a well-deserved hundred. He made sure to cross the line in the second Test, however, with a fitting boundary through the off-side that summed up his innings.

Prior to the start of the series, Rahul was being considered as a middle-order batsman vying for Ajinkya Rahane’s spot in the side. An untimely injury to Mayank Agarwal suddenly boosted him to the top of the order instead. He made the most of the opportunity with his newfound defensive technique.

After surviving the testing initial phase in the first session at Lord’s, Rahul opened up a bit after the conditions became suitable for batting. There were plenty of square drives and cuts on the off-side, combined with a solid defense. Once he was settled, he struck boundaries at will, with one of them getting him to the 100-run landmark.

Earlier in the day, Rohit Sharma dominated the opening stand, crunching boundaries on a consistent basis. He took a particular liking to Sam Curran, smashing him for four boundaries in an over. That got Rohit’s juices flowing, and he didn’t look back from there.
