England’s wicket-keeper batsman, Jos Buttler lavishes praise on Joe Root’s ability to play spin bowling as the Three Lions gear up to face India in the first of the four-match Test series in Chennai. England is coming off a clean sweep over Sri Lanka and captain Joe Root bagged the Man of the Series award for amassing 426 runs in 2 Tests.

The English skipper displayed a masterclass of batting against spinners in Galle, where the pitch took a turn from the first session of the match. The right-hander registered a double-century in the first Test, and then followed it up with a 186-run innings in the second Test. These tons are coming on the back of a lean run from the bat of Root where he found it extremely difficult to convert his fifties into hundreds.

Joe Root is one of the best exponents of the sweep shot: Jos Buttler

Jos Buttler heaps praise on Root’s judgement of length. The footwork of the right-hander was impeccable and decisive in mind: either coming forward to the ball or rocking back deep in the crease, there were only rare instances where he was confused. Buttler reckons that Root not only has all the shots in his book but also is able to rotate the strike to release the pressure.

“Joe was in fantastic form in Sri Lanka, he has always had a brilliant game to play spin bowling. He is one of the best exponents of the sweep shot and he picks length brilliantly. It is a big strength when playing spin, he is very hard to bowl dot balls at. He scores quickly against spin and he has so many shots, he manages to rotate the strike,” Jos Buttler told ANI.

Root batted for hours and hours and didn’t lose his composure – the characteristic which Buttler is praising highly. The wicket-keeper believes that this form of his skipper will be needed against India, in particular on the spin-friendly pitch in Chennai.

“He did that fantastically well in Sri Lanka, the biggest thing about him was the hunger shown by him to bat for long periods. He showed great application both mentally and tactically. He is in great form and it is a great place for him to be at just at the start of the year,” Buttler added.
