Cricket’s wait to return to the biggest sporting global event will be even more prolonged after the International Olympic Committee (IOC) rejected the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) bid.

As a result, the sport will not be marking its presence at the 2028 Olympics, which is slated to be held in Los Angeles, with the IOC having conveyed its decision to the ICC.

Only two nations participated in cricket at the 1900 Paris Games, which marked the sport’s first and last Olympic appearance. Great Britain competed against the hosts France, but Great Britain prevailed by 158 runs to take home the gold medal.

The T20 variant of the sport was recently played at the 2022 Commonwealth Games among eight nations in the women’s division. Australia won the gold medal by defeating India in the championship match.

The 2028 Los Angeles Olympics would feature a total of 28 sports events, it was confirmed in February 2022. In August 2022, it was revealed that the IOC was reviewing cricket along with eight other sports.

ICC plans to create a new Olympic Committee to promote cricket’s 2032 bid:

The ICC will establish up a new Olympic Committee now that the possibility of the sport being featured at the 2028 Olympics has been definitively eliminated.

Jay Shah, who is also the president of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) and the secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), will reportedly take the helm moving forward.

In accordance with IOC regulations, a sport must fulfill a number of requirements to qualify for the Olympics, including priorities for cost and complexity reduction, engaging the best athletes and prioritizing safety and health, global appeal, interest from the host country, gender equality, youth relevance, maintaining integrity and fairness to support clean sports, and long-term sustainability.
