Three-time IPL champions Chennai Super Kings arrived at IPL 2021 auction with Rs. 22.90 available salary cap. Chennai Super Kings picked up 6 players during the auction. The MS Dhoni-led side spent Rs. 20.35 crore on these 6 players. Out the these, there were 3 overseas players and 3 domestic players.
The franchise now has filled all the 25 available slots in their squad. CSK has a very poor show in last year’s edition of the Indian Premier League. The franchise finished at the 7th spot in the points table in IPL 2020, their worst performance ever in the tournament.
Krishnappa Gowtham was the biggest buy of Chennai Super Kings. The franchise owners invested Rs. 9.25 for the all-rounder, after engaging in intense bidding during the IPL 2021 auction. England all-rounder Moeen Ali was CSK’s another favourite choice, and the franchise spent Rs. 7 crore for the 33-year-old cricketer. CSK also went ahead to buy Cheteshwar Pujara at his base price of Rs. 50 lakh, providing an IPL contract to the Indian cricketer after six years.
Ahead of the IPL auction 2021, CSK retained 18 players in their team. Along with MS Dhoni, 2010, 2011, and 2018 IPL champions CSK retained Suresh Raina, Ambati Rayudu, KM Asif, Deepak Chahar, Dwayne Bravo, Faf du Plessis, Imran Tahir, N Jagadeesan, Karn Sharma, Lungi Ngidi, Mitchell Santner, Ravindra Jadeja, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shardul Thakur, Sam Curran, Josh Hazlewood and R Sai Kishore.
There were six players with whom CSK decided to part ways ahead of the IPL 2021 auction. Kedar Jadhav, Murali Vijay, Harbhajan Singh, Piyush Chawla, Monu Singh and Shane Watson were part of CSK’s released list.
