Cricketer turned commentator Gautam Gambhir wants IPL team Punjab Kings to open with West Indies swashbuckling batsman Chris Gayle.
Since IPL 2020, Gayle was pushed down to bat at no.3 in order to accommodate Punjab Kings(Then Kings XI Punjab) batters KL Rahul and Mayank Agarwal in the opening slot.
If Chris Gayle is in your team, then why would you want him to bat at number three: Gautam Gambhir
Gayle has done pretty well in his new role as he still maintains the strike rate of 133 in the IPL 2021 so far. Gayle’s national team West Indies did the same thing with the southpaw, slotted him to bat at no.3
Gambhir feels that Gayle is not the kind of batsman who would waste balls and can give Punjab Kings a crackling start in their innings.
“He has to open the batting. If Chris Gayle is in your team, then why would you want him to bat at number three. It makes no sense for anyone to put Chris Gayle at number three. West Indies did that, Punjab Kings did that. I have no clue why someone would do that,” Gambhir said on Star Sports.
“If Chris is in your playing 11, he has to open the batting because he is not going to waste balls. Probably at number three, he will have to run for a lot of singles, as compared to opening the batting. He could probably get you off to a flyer,” he added.
Punjab Kings placed at sixth position on IPL 2021 points table
Punjab Kings are positioned sixth on the points table, having won three out of their eight games and will aim to win all of their remaining fixtures to book their berth in the playoffs.
Punjab Kings will kick off their second phase campaign in UAE when they will meet Rajasthan Royals on September 21 at the Dubai International Stadium.
