Delhi Capitals coach Ricky Ponting revealed that Ishant Sharma is suffering from a heel niggle and the team is helping the pacer to recover faster. Ponting also lauded Avesh Khan, who has replaced Ishant Sharma in the team’s playing 11. Ishant Sharma did not feature in the two matches of Delhi Capitals in IPL 2021. Delhi Capitals won the first match against Chennai Super Kings by 7 wickets but lost to Rajasthan Royals in the second match by 3 wickets.

Avesh Khan, who played for Delhi Capitals in Ishant Sharma’s absence, showed a brilliant bowling performance for the team in the two games. In the match against Chennai Super Kings, he took two wickets while conceding just 23 runs in his 4 overs.

He got the important wickets of Faf du Plessis and MS Dhoni in the match and dismissed both the CSK players for a duck. In the match against Rajasthan Royals, the right-arm pacer Avesh Khan scalped 3 wickets for 32 runs.

Ishant Sharma Has A Heel Niggle, Informs Ricky Ponting

While speaking during the post-match virtual conference, Delhi Capitals coach Ricky Ponting gave a health update about Ishant Sharma and also lauded Avesh Khan for his performance.

“Coming into the first game, Ishant Sharma obviously had a heel niggle that we have been trying to work through but Avesh grabbed his opportunity with both hands. He has been around with this franchise for a few years now and has not got the opportunity that he has been craving.

“Look so far, he has been one of our real finds and if you got an Indian fast bowler like him and the likes of Woakes, Rabada, Nortje and T Curran around we end up with a really strong fast bowling brigade,” Ricky Ponting said.

Ponting also said that Avesh Khan has been ultra-impressive in the season so far and has bettered his bowling in all manners.

“He has been ultra-impressive, pretty much from the first day we arrived here for the training camp. Physically he looks a little bit better, he lost a little bit of weight from last season. He is definitely fitter and bowling faster.

“Without a little bit of extra fitness on his side, he is able to maintain his action better. His lines and lengths and slower ball execution is excellent so far,” the former Australian cricketer Ricky Ponting further said.

In their previous match against Rajasthan Royals, Delhi Capitals lost their top-order batsmen quickly to Unadkat’s outstanding spell. Later Rishabh Pant (51) scored a half-century which helped Delhi Capitals to score 147-8 while batting first.
