Rishabh Pant was given the captaincy of the side after Iyer had been ruled out of the tournament due to a shoulder injury, which he had sustained during the ODI series against England ahead of the IPL 2021.
The wicket-keeper led the side to the top of the table before the tournament was suspended due to a covid-19 outbreak among four different franchises.
Iyer captained Delhi to its first-ever IPL final last season, but they faltered in the final against Mumbai Indians. Now, although, Iyer is set to return to the side after recovering, the franchise has decided to stick with Rishabh Pant for the remainder of the season.
“JSW-GMR co-owned Delhi Capitals today announced that Rishabh Pant will continue as captain for the remainder of the 2021 season of the Indian Premier League,” the franchise said in a statement.
Under Rishabh Pant, the Capitals won 6 out of 8 matches in the India leg, and currently are at the numero uno spot in the points table. This also perhaps is an indication of the future which the Capitals’ owners see in young Rishabh Pant with the mega-auction slated for next year as they may not be able to retain Iyer.
Iyer, however, will return to the line-up straightaway after being declared fit. Slotting back at number 3, he may be replacing Steve Smith.
They will take on Sunrisers Hyderabad on the 22nd of September in Dubai. Delhi would be aiming to go one better this time than last season and clinch their maiden IPL title.
