“I got hit off a bouncer from Waqar Younis”: Sachin Tendulkar

Indian batting legend Sachin Tendulkar shared a never-before-heard story about Javed Miandad.

“On my first visit to Pakistan, we were playing the fourth Test after drawing the first three. We were 36/4 down in the final innings of the fourth Test. Waqar Younis smacked me in the nose with a bouncer; I wasn’t used to wearing a grill, so my face was exposed to the impact. “I fractured my nose and I was bleeding,” Tendulkar said as he told the anecdote at an Infosys event.

“Naturally, the game came to an end. Pakistan’s players recognized the importance of the situation. They would have been in a dominant position if I had walked away. They were determined to complete the game and win. In the midst of the commotion, Javed Miandad — we all know how he can be — nudged me and whispered, “Your Nose Is Broken, You Will Have To Go To The Hospital.”

“‘Javed, leave him alone,’ Imran says. I kept on hitting. That was one of those times when I realized that an injury like that might make or break you. I’m pleased I didn’t walk to the dressing room and instead remained to bat there. “We drew the Test and the series, which meant a lot,” Tendulkar said.

Sachin Tendulkar holds the record for receiving the most Man-of-the-match awards in International Cricket in all forms combined.
