India‘s bowling coach for the Sri Lanka tour Paras Mhambrey stated that Kuldeep Yadav is on track to regain his prime form. He is also confident that the leg-spinner will make a strong contention for a spot in India’s T20 World Cup squad.

Yadav looked like a shade of his old best during the second T20I versus Sri Lanka on Wednesday; he gave away 15 runs in his first three overs picking two wickets – he was unlucky to see a catch getting dropped and an incorrect lbw decision not reviewed off his bowling – but his figures were spoiled in his last over.

Paras Mhambrey is impressed by the chinaman’s progress after enduring a tough last couple of years while spending more time on the bench than in the field, both for India and for Kolkata Knight Riders.

“He is an extremely talented bowler. And he’s a thinking bowler. There were a lot of discussions we had during the period before the games that we spent together. We were seeing videos, discussing plans. It all boils down to execution, so the credit should be given to him and the way he has taken it up,” Paras Mhambrey said after the game on Wednesday.

“Yes, there’s (sic) challenges, and yes he’s been on and off, in and out of the team for a while now – which he knows. He also knows that he needs to work hard to maintain his position, which he’s doing.

“I’m so happy to see that, and very happy as well with the results that he’s getting. I’m sure he’ll take a lot of positives from this. Thinking ahead, the World Cup is also round the corner, he’ll really increase his chances to be part of that squad,” he stated.

Kuldeep now has one more T20I and half-a-season of IPL 2021 to make an impact before the World Cup. However. the competition for places is really stiff in the Indian team.

Paras Mhambrey updates on Navdeep Saini’s injury:

The bowling coach also revealed that Navdeep Saini is being kept under the observation of BCCI’s medical team after sustaining a shoulder injury while fielding in the second T20I.

Saini, who hadn’t bowled a single over in the game, landed awkwardly on the ground and lay there for a while holding his shoulder after making a jump in trying to stop a boundary. The speedster was soon attended by the physio and was taken off the field.

Saini is unlikely to participate in the third T20I on Thursday. The BCCI had earlier added all five net bowlers on the tour – Ishan Porel, Sandeep Warrier, Arshdeep Singh, Sai Kishore, Simarjeet Singh – to the main squad after 9 players of the squad were forced into isolation following Krunalo Pandya testing positive for covid-19.

“In Navdeep’s case, the medical team is handling him, we will assess his situation maybe tonight or tomorrow morning and take a decision accordingly. Once the decision is finalised and conveyed to the selectors and coach, and if needed, we will make changes. We have to assess and wait till the medical team to informs us,” Paras Mhambrey updated.

After 4 players making their T20I debut on Wednesday, another player is likely to make his debut on Thursday, if Saini isn’t deemed fit.
