Indian fielding coach R Sridhar is not unfazed by the lack of preparation ahead of their World Test Championship final against New Zealand at the Rose Bowl in Southampton on the 18th of June. India’s 20-man squad announced by the BCCI depart in the first week of June and have to most likely spend ten days in quarantine. R Sridhar believes that lack of preparation time could work in their favour too.

India certainly have the momentum on their side and reached the final after beating England in the home Test series by 3-1. Virat Kohli’s men suffered a mammoth defeat in the first Test and came back to comprehensively defeat the tourists in the next three to seal their spot in the final. The 20-man squad has a plethora of match-winners and have what it takes to roll over New Zealand.

R Sridhar underlined that sometimes such factors could work in their favour as the team is mentally more ready as in the case of injuries, the side tends to concentrate a lot better. The fielding coach also remarked that when under-prepared, the outfit focuses a lot better and he hopes that India will perform to the best of their abilities.

“Sometimes it can work in our favor as well because that way you’re mentally more ready. It’s like playing with an injury sometimes when you’re injured, you tend to concentrate a little better. Sometimes when you’re a little under-prepared, you tend to focus more and maybe that will bring the best out of us as well so that that is the kind of mindset we are going in with,” Sridhar said as quoted by Hindustan Times.

R Sridhar also called for mental smartness to come to the fore as he affirmed that the team is experienced; all the members have played against New Zealand and in England. The 50-year old commented that they can’t plan how many sessions they would require and that experience would be crucial.

“It’s time to be mentally smart, we have a very experienced team going into going to the final. Each guy is capable of adapting to the situation. They have played against New Zealand and played in England. So, I think that experience will count and we will have to come to the fore because we really can’t plan as to how many sessions we want because we only have to take what is given to us,” he added.
