Former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir has warned against putting too much pressure on the latest sensation in Indian cricket Shubman Gill following his breakout debut series against Australia Down Under.

Shubman Gill showed remarkable composure, mental fortitude, and of-course his precocious skills against the likes of Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, and Nathan Lyon and proved to be one of the major spearheads behind India’s triumph for the ages.

Gill made his debut by replacing his former U-19 teammate Prithvi Shaw in the Boxing Day Test at the MCG and in the very first innings, he stamped his authority as he endured baptism with fire against a relentless and hostile Australian pace attack on a tricky Melbourne pitch.

Shubman Gill missed out from scoring his maiden half-century [45] in his debut innings for Team India but he made amends for it with two classy 50s in Sydney and Brisbane.

His best knock, undoubtedly, was the 91 that he scored during India’s record run-chase of 328 in the fourth innings at the Gabba. The 21-year-old took on Australia’s short-pitch ploy with disdain, ferociously cutting and pulling the likes of Mitchell Starc.

He missed out on scoring a well-deserved hundred but it was enough to lay the foundation for an eventual Indian win.

Gautam Gambhir heaped praise on young Gill but also reckoned that one should not jump the gun and put undue pressure on the 21-year-old. The former opener said that while Shubman Gill has had a honeymoon start to his career, he still needs to put his head down and score consistently for his country in the upcoming games.

“Gill should be opening with Rohit Sharma, no doubt about it. But let’s not jump the gun. We just can’t put someone really high up there. Yes, he has got the talent but he needs to keep his head down because international cricket can be tough,” Gautam Gambhir told Star Sports Game Plan.

“Yes, you have had a honeymoon start to your international career – it can’t be better than this. Playing in Australia, winning the series with a young side – you have done really well. You have batted beautifully, no doubt about it, but let’s give him time as well and let him develop on his own rather than putting too much pressure and too much expectations on him.” he added.
