On Sunday, in Chattogram, engineered by Kyle Mayers the West Indies recorded the highest successful chase in Asia in the first Test match of the 2-match series against Bangladesh.

West Indies were set a target of 395 on a pitch that was offering plenty of assist to the spinners – Bangladesh has emerged as one of a strong side at home owing to the potency of their spinner to utilize the conditions.

However, Kyle Mayers, making his Test debut, led the West Indies team, which was weakened by the absence of regular skipper, Jason Holder, and other regulars, to a historic and an unthinkable successful run-chase.

Mayers, made a double hundred on his debut, in the fourth innings, against the Bangladeshi spin cartel! The left-hander’s feat only gets bigger every time we realize what Mayers has done – while he was known to be a decent batsman, his scores of 40, and 8 in the practice match, and 40 in the first innings wouldn’t have made anyone even envisage that the newbie will be at the helm of the greatest Test run-chase in Asia.

As West Indies, led by Kraigg Brathwaite broke several records, so did the man who is responsible for it.

While the 28-year-old became the 6th batsman to notch up a double ton in the 4th innings, he is the first batsman in the history of Test cricket to do it on his Test debut! According to ESPNcricinfo’s Statsguru, the previous best score for in the 4th innings on debut was 112 by Abbas Ali Baig in 1959.

The Barbados-born southpaw becomes only the 2nd batsman – after compatriot Gordon Greenidge in 1984 – to score a 200 in 4th innings in a winning cause, while he is the first one to do the same on his debut. The previous best 4th innings score a successful run-chase by a batsman making his debut was 105 by Yasir Hameed in 2003.

The second Test match between West Indies and Bangladesh will commence on 11 February in Dhaka. The hosts not only have to pull themselves out from the loss but also they may be without the services of an all-rounder, Shakib Al Hasan, who couldn’t bat or ball in the second innings due to a strain in the left-thigh which he suffered in the first Test.
