Ever since Mohammad Amir’s shocking retirement came to the fore in December 2020, there have been constant talks of his return. After captain Babar Azam and head coach Misbah-Ul-Haq, bowling coach Waqar Younis has joined the debate. While Waqar Younis thinks Mohammad Amir is a terrific cricketer, he thinks the left-arm seamer needs to earn his place.

Mohammad Amir, who featured in 36 Tests, 61 ODIs, and 50 T20Is, justified his decision to retire by claiming that the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) officials had tortured him continuously. The 29-year old further revealed that the rest of the team members had not supported his inclusion in the team either. But the left-arm fast bowler had claimed on multiple occasions that he was open to returning to the national side.

Waqar Younis stated that no doubt, Mohammad Amir is a great player; however, he needs to impress the selectors by proving his keenness to return. The former pace spearhead highlighted that Amir has to work hard and do all the right things to play for Pakistan again as it’s not the same as franchise cricket.

“No doubt he’s a fine cricketer, but if he doesn’t want to take his retirement back and impress selectors by playing cricket, it will be hard. It’s Pakistan cricket, it’s not yours or my cricket (team), you have to do the right things to play for your country. This is not a franchise cricket and one got to remember that,” Younis said in a virtual press conference.

Earlier, Pakistan skipper Babar Azam heaped praises on Amir, saying he is one of the best left-arm bowlers in the world and revealed he would talk to him about the issues he has. Azam hopes for Amir to perform in international cricket as he did in the PSL.

When we talk, we’ll discuss what his issues with the national side are. He’s one of the best left-arm bowlers and I really admire him. The way he’s performed in the PSL so far, I just hope he performs the same way again, and that’s what we are focused on so far,” the right-handed batsman told Cricket Pakistan.
