He attributes the opportunity, along with the captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s leadership, to giving him the confidence to bowl under pressure and in front of large crowds at the biggest stadiums in the globe.

Ngidi made his IPL debut in 2018 with the Chennai Super Kings, and he was crucial to their triumph. In seven games that year, the 26-year-old took 11 wickets for an outstanding average of 14.18 each as the Yellow Army won their fourth trophy.

Ngidi claimed in an interview with The Guardian that Dhoni’s confidence in his capacity to win matches as a child played a significant role. He also acknowledged that the initial crush of spectators during the competition subsided.

“Being trusted to win games by someone of Dhoni’s caliber at the age of 22 was huge for me. I learned how to manage a large audience from the IPL as well. I had never performed in front of that many people, so at first, it was a little overwhelming. However, once you get going, it is easy.”

Ngidi is still striving to make his way back into the game after a hamstring injury in 2019 hindered his progress despite having good numbers in both T20 and Test cricket. His return to the pace he was capable of moving at took some time, but a comeback to the Proteas team shows he is moving in the right direction.

Ngidi hopes to demonstrate that he is back to his best when South Africa, who is presently in England, prepares to play them in an all-format series later this month.
