The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) has started searching the potential candidates for a coach and are in the process of closing in on appointing one. Ramesh Powar had earlier served as Mumbai’s coach before the BCCI reinstated him in the position for the Indian women’s team. Former Indian cricketers like Wasim Jaffer and Amol Mazumdar are amongst the ones who have applied for the job.

The Cricket Improvement Committee (CIC), consisting of Vinod Kambli, Nilesh Kulkarni and Jatin Paranjpe, will interview the prospective applicants in the next few days. Apart from Wasim Jaffer and Amol Mazumdar, the men in the fray are former Indian all-rounder and veteran coach Balwinder Singh Sandhu, former Indian spinner Sairaj Bahutule, former Mumbai coach Sulakshan Kulkarni.

The others in the mix are Pradeep Sunderram, Nandan Phadnis, Umesh Patwal and Vinod Raghvan. An MCA official underlined that they have shortlisted nine names to be interviewed next week as applicants have been chosen from men who are beginners and veterans in the coaching business. The last date to apply was on the 24th of May (Monday). “We have shortlisted nine names and the interviews will take place this week,” the official told Cricbuzz.

Amol Mazumdar was reportedly the preferred choice for the MCA:

Former Mumbai skipper Amol Mazumdar was reportedly the previous choice before a dispute between him and the CIC, then headed by Lalchand Rajput, led him to lose the job. While Mazumdar might be the frontrunner with the MCA still choosing to go through a process, Jaffer remains not too far behind as he is the highest run-getter in the domestic circuit.

On the other hand, Balwinder Singh Sandhu, a former World Cup winner, stays firmly in the mix too. The MCA enlisted that the interested applicants must be residents of Mumbai, should have featured in 50 first-class games, must be an NCA-certified coach with experience in a state or a franchise team or even at the NCA.
