Indian head coach Ravi Shastri has described the Ajinkya Rahane-led outfit’s historic series win against Australia as ‘unreal’ especially after the horrors of Adelaide where the visitors were knocked over for their lowest total in Test history.

After having suffered a humiliating defeat in the first Test at the Adelaide Oval, Team India came roaring back to turn the tables on the home side despite a number of their first-choice players getting ruled out due to injury.

India won the Boxing Day Test convincingly by 8 wickets in Melbourne, salvaged a hard-fought draw in Sydney before breaching Australia’s fortress in Brisbane by completing their third-highest successful run-chase (328) in history.

“It is the toughest tour ever. Nothing surpasses this. After 36 all out, this is unreal,” Ravi Shastri said at the virtual press-conference. Feeling defeated is one thing but giving up is not in our vocabulary.” he added.

Rishabh Pant’s unbeaten 138-ball 89 was one of the main reasons behind India overcoming late jitters and scripting a maniac three-wicket win.

Ravi Shastri was effusive in his praise for young Pant, who in the past has coped heavy criticism due to his erratic strokeplay or lackluster batting. Shastri said that the Delhi swashbuckler was always clear in his mind that there was a target to be gunned down.

Pant has scored a swashbuckling 97 in the fourth innings in Sydney. Shastri said that the southpaw would have won India the game had he not gotten out.

In his mind Pant was always chasing. You could see he was looking at the scoreboard,” Shastri said.

“He is a good listener. As coach, you don’t want to change anyone’s natural ability but you need to strike the right balance between caution and aggression. You can’t be reckless. Rishabh has learnt that,” he added.

“He could have finished the game in Sydney had he been there for some more time. This time he made sure he was there till the end,” he said. When he doesn’t keep well, people criticise him But he can help you win matches like these.”
