On the fourth day of the first match of the two-Test series between New Zealand and Sri Lanka at the Hagley Oval in Christchurch, Sri Lankan cricketer Dinesh Chandimal completed his 5,000 runs in Test cricket. Chandimal, who made his Test debut in 2011 against South Africa, became the 11th Sri Lankan player to achieve this milestone.

When he enters the field in the second Test in Wellington on Friday, Dinesh Chandimal will be within striking distance of Arjuna Ranatunga’s 5105 in the ninth. Chandimal will be one of three live Sri Lankan players in the top ten, with opener Dimuth Karunaratne (6090) also an important member of the lineup.

Due in major part to a stand between veteran Angelo Mathews and Dinesh Chandimal, Sri Lanka’s World Test Championship final drive has left New Zealand in Christchurch requiring a record run chase.

The pair contributed 105 over the middle of day four, which enabled the tourists to reach a total of 302 in the second innings, setting New Zealand a 285-run target.

If New Zealand scores the necessary runs, they will surpass Australia’s 201/3 run chase from February 2016 at Hagley Oval, which is currently 28/1 as of the end of the play.
