Young India opener Shubman Gill had a great start to his Test career as he helped India register their second straight Test series win in Australia, scoring 50, 35*, 45, and a career-best 91 – at the Gabba. This was a superlative performance, but former Australia bowler Brad Hogg feels there still is a weakness in Gill’s batting that anyone would attack.

Shubman Gill’s brilliant form meant that Mayank Agarwal fell down the pecking order in options to partner Rohit Sharma in the home Test series against England and now Gill will be gearing up for his sternest test, the tour of England where techniques of best of the best batsmen are tested.

There Is Just One Little Weakness In His Batting Which I Would Be Attacking: Brad Hogg On Shubman Gill

Former Australia spinner Brad Hogg loves what he sees of Gill and his batting capabilities. In fact, Hogg hopes India stick to the Gill-Rohit combination at the top for the Test matches in England, first the WTC final against New Zealand and then a five-Test series against the hosts.

However, after a superb outing against Australia, Gill failed to do justice to his talent against England scoring 119 runs at an average of 19.83, and then in the recently suspended IPL 2021, he could muster just 132 runs in 7 matches and there were calls to even drop him.

Hogg did highlight one flaw which he’s spotted in Gill’s batting.

“There is just one little weakness in his batting which I would be attacking. Whenever you can, you just try and let him play away from his body outside the off-stump. He sort of plays a half-cut half back foot drive, you just got to try and expose that with the new ball. That’s the only thing I see as his weakness,” Hogg told timesnownews.com.

However, despite the flaws, Hogg, who played seven Tests, 123 ODIs, and 15 T20Is for Australia from 1996- 2014 and was part of Australia’s 2003 and 2007 World Cup-winning teams, said that he loves Shubman Gill’s attitude and praised him for his composure and focus while at the crease.
