Media reports suggest that Pakistan pacer Mohammad Amir might soon be making a comeback to the national team.

Amir retired from international Cricket in 2019. He has since been playing franchise cricket all around the world. Most recently, he took 9 wickets in 7 matches for Karachi Kings in Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2023, missing several matches due to injury.

A report was recently published by Pakobserver.net, which suggested that Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief Najam Sethi is keen on giving the left-arm pacer another chance in the national team.

This came after another recent report, which suggested that Pakistan team selectors have informed Amir to be prepared for a national team call-up.

In an ODI World Cup year, preparing the best squad you can is the aim for each team, if the PCB feels that Mohammad Amir is one of their better choices, they will keep him in and around the squad in the lead-up to the World Cup in October-November.

Pakistan will play 5 ODI and 5 T20 series at home against New Zealand. While several of their opponent’s big players are playing in the IPL, facing a side like NZ is always a challenge and good practice for WC.

Pak most recently faced Afghanistan in a 3-match T20 series. Due to the predominately playing young players, Pakistan lost a series to the Afghans for the first time.

The fascinating international career of Mohammad Amir

Mohammad Amir made his international debut on the grandest stage, in Pakistan’s group stage match against England in ICC World Twenty20 2009. He was part of Pak’s Cup-winning squad.

His career, however, is defined by controversies. Most prominent of which is the 2010 spot-fixing scandal. In a 2010 Test match against England, Amir, along with fellow Pakistanis Salman Butt and Mohammad Asif were accused of spot-fixing. They were suspended by ICC, and Amir faced a 5-year ban.

He made his international return in the 2016 Asia Cup, but it was his performances in the 2017 Champions Trophy and 2019 ODI World Cup. Following this, he retired from the international game.
