Former Australian cricketer Shane Watson lavished praise on Australian Test captain, Pat Cummins, for the way he handled the saga revolving around Justin Langer’s resignation as the head coach of the national team.

Cummins defended his teammates and himself after former teammates of Langer began condemning Cricket Australia for the way they handled Langer’s contract extension and also the team members for not coming to Langer’s aid.

The way he handled it after it had settled down and Justin Langer had resigned, he has handled it all so well because he is so personable, very honest, and very endearing to the public and to his teammates.

I am super excited for the Australian team with Pat leading the charge and the next phase of Australian cricket because they have certainly got the talent and the leadership to be able to take it forward,” Watson said.

Shane Watson backs split coaching for Australia

Since handling all three formats becomes tough at the highest level, it would be better if Australia tries to have different coaches for formats, as per Watson. Considering the pandemic bubbles as well, the stress levels go through the roof at tough times.

I think it is going to have to be a necessity to break up the formats with their coaches. I think there is a good chance they will split the roles as I don’t think it is sustainable that everyone does every single format for a long period of time.

There is always going to be burnout and fatigue in a team environment, especially now with Covid and bubbles and similar situations that are around. The sooner that Cricket Australia (CA) break up the formats with the coaches, I think everyone will benefit from it,” Watson added.

Langer’s stint ended after Australia retained the Ashes with a 4-0 win.
